In a first, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct CBSE Class 10 board exams in two separate sessions beginning with the 2026 academic year. The move comes after prolonged discussions between the CBSE and the Ministry of Education to reduce exam-related stress and offer students a second chance to improve scores.
Exam Schedule for Class 10, 2026
- Session 1: February 17 – March 9, 2026
- Session 2: May 15 – June 1, 2026
Key Subject Dates for Session 2
- May 15: Mathematics (Standard & Basic)
- May 19: Science
- May 22: Social Science
- May 26 & 30: Language papers
Why Two Sessions?
According to the board, holding exams twice a year will provide flexibility and relieve pressure on students who otherwise had only one opportunity to prove themselves. The system is also designed to support those facing unforeseen issues during the first round.
Mixed Reactions From Students
The announcement has sparked varied reactions among students.
Moumita, a Class 10 student from Bhubaneswar, said: “Having two chances feels like a safety net, but the wait between two exams is nerve-wracking.”
Rohan from Jaipur commented: “I appreciate the flexibility, but I hope the long gap doesn’t affect our focus.”
Teachers Voice Concerns
Teachers too are divided on the new model.
Maya Sharma, a Delhi-based CBSE teacher, highlighted the benefits: “The two sessions will help students who face unforeseen circumstances during the first exam.”
At the same time, she warned that “the extended timeline may lead to prolonged stress and impact students’ mental well-being.”
What Lies Ahead
As the two-session board exam system takes effect, both students and educators are still adjusting to the format. While the added opportunity is being seen as a progressive step, concerns remain about the longer academic calendar and the mental load it might bring.
