Medical students across India are waiting for an important update. The counselling process for NEET PG 2025 has been delayed. This delay affects thousands of students who wish to join postgraduate medical courses like MD, MS, and DNB. The NEET PG 2025 result was announced on August 19, 2025 . However, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), which manages the counselling, has not yet released the dates for admissions.

This delay is mainly due to two reasons: the National Medical Commission (NMC) has not yet approved the final number of seats in medical colleges, and a case related to the exam is still pending in the Supreme Court. Students are expressing their concern and anxiety over this wait, as it could delay the start of their academic year.

What is NEET PG and Why is Counselling Important?

NEET PG stands for National Eligibility Entrance Test for Postgraduates. It is a very important exam for doctors who want to study further and become specialists. After clearing this exam, students need to go through a process called counselling. During counselling, students choose which medical colleges and specialisations (like heart doctor or brain surgeon) they want to join, based on their exam ranks.

The NEET PG 2025 exam results came out on August 19, 2025 . Usually, the counselling process starts soon after the results. However, this year, there has been a noticeable delay. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) is responsible for conducting counselling for 50% of the seats across all government medical colleges in India. These are called All India Quota (AIQ) seats. The remaining 50% of seats are filled by state counselling bodies.

Students Share Their Concerns

Many students who passed NEET PG 2025 are feeling worried. They have taken to social media platforms like 'X' (formerly Twitter) to share their anxiety. Students are concerned that the delay in counselling will push back the start of their postgraduate academic year. They also say that the long wait is causing them mental stress and uncertainty about their future.

One common question among students is: "When will NEET PG counselling dates 2025 be announced?" They are eagerly waiting for this information so they can plan their next steps.

Reasons Behind the Delay

Reports from officials, including those from the Tamil Nadu State Selection Committee, point to two main reasons for the delay in NEET PG 2025 counselling:

  • Seat Matrix Not Finalized: The National Medical Commission (NMC) needs to finalize the total number of MD/MS seats available. This includes seats in new medical colleges and any increased seats in existing colleges. Until this list of available seats, known as the 'seat matrix', is approved, the counselling process cannot begin.
  • Supreme Court Hearing Postponed: There is an ongoing legal matter in the Supreme Court concerning the NEET PG exam. The hearings for this case have been postponed multiple times. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has stated that the delay is also happening because of this continuous postponement. This legal battle is reportedly between the National Board of Examinations (NBE) and some students.

Because of these reasons, the MCC has reportedly asked state counselling bodies to put their state NEET PG counselling processes on hold. This is to ensure that the All India Quota (AIQ) and state quota counselling processes can happen in a coordinated way, once the central counselling dates are out.

What About State Quota Counselling?

While the All India Quota counselling is on hold, some states have started their own counselling for reserved state quota seats. For example, Tamil Nadu has begun its TN NEET PG counselling 2025 for state-specific seats. However, the full schedule for even these state counsellings will depend on when the MCC starts its All India Quota counselling process.

What Happens Next?

Students are advised to keep a close watch on the official websites. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) is expected to announce the NEET PG 2025 counselling dates soon. All updates, including the round-wise schedule, will be available on the official MCC website: mcc.nic.in .

Only students who have cleared the NEET PG 2025 exam and scored above the minimum required qualifying marks will be eligible to take part in the counselling process. Candidates should regularly check the MCC website for the latest information to avoid missing any important updates.
