The Barkatullah University was established in 1970 in the state of Madhya Pradesh. It was formerly known as Bhopal University and was renamed to Barkatullah Vishwavidyalaya in 1988 in the living memory of freedom fighter, Prof. Barkatullah, who belonged to Bhopal. The university was accredited with A grade by NAAC in 2025.

University campus covering an area of approx. 400 acres of land is located along Hoshangabad highway at a distance of about 3 km from Rani Kamlapati Railway Station. University covers almost full spectrum of higher education, offering courses in its affiliated Colleges and University Teaching Departments in the faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science, Life Science, Engineering, Law, Commerce, Education, Physical Education, Technology, Home Science and Management. Territorial jurisdiction of the university extends to eight districts namely Bhopal, Sehore, Vidisha, Raisen, Narmadapuram, Harda, Betul and Rajgarh.

Barkatullah University offers UG, PG, and Ph.D. programs in the disciplines of Arts, Science, Commerce, etc. Admission to UG and PG programs is based on merit in the qualifying exam or scores of National-level entrance exams such as CUET UG, JEE Main, CUET PG, CMAT, CAT, MPMET, GATE, etc. Barkatullah University Ph.D. admissions are based on the Ph.D. entrance exam conducted by the university or have a valid score in UGC-NET/JRF, CSIR-NET/JRF, or GATE followed by an Interview conducted by the University.

The Barkatullah University admission process is conducted entirely online. Admission is based on various entrance exam scores like CUET-PG, SSAT, and others. Candidates willing to get admission through CUET must first register for the CUET exam. Then appear for the CUET exam. Then appear for the counselling and visit the selected and allotted university. Pay the admission fee along with the admission form.

Barkatullah University PhD admissions are based on the Ph.D. entrance exam conducted by the university or have a valid score in UGC-NET/JRF, CSIR-NET/JRF, or GATE followed by an Interview conducted by the University.

Barkatullah University offers scholarships to students belonging to weak economic backgrounds and having strong academic records in the qualifying examination. BU Bhopal offers scholarships to students as financial assistance. Scholarships are awarded to eligible students. The Post Matric Scholarship include Maintenance allowance, Study tour charges, Reimbursement of compulsory non-refundable fees, and others.

Scholarships are paid to the students whose parents/ guardians' income from all the sources does not exceed INR 2 LPA in the case of the Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme and INR 2.50 LPA in case of the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme. Meri Cum Mean Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to students who received at least 90% in PCM or 80% in Arts or Commerce in their 12th-grade exams from the appropriate boards (CBSE, ISC, State Boards). To avail this scholarship, students are advised to visit the University physically and get all the further information regarding the scholarship, they may then fill out the scholarship form and submit it at the University office.

Sports Scholarship

Students who have competed in athletic competitions and taken home a medal or two at the national or international level are eligible for this award.
