IIT Hyderabad is officially recognized as the Institute of National Eminence by the Income Tax Department (Govt of India) on March 27, 2025, Income Tax Department, Ministry of Finance, GoI. Donations to IITH qualify for a 100% deduction (earlier it was 50%) under Section 80G of the Income-tax Act, 1961. This step will be a key driver for donations and philanthropy to the institute, thus aiding the larger ecosystem and IITH's march toward excellence in education, research, innovation, and infrastructure.
This recognition is also a testimony to IITH’s rising national stature as a center of excellence for science and technology. These initiatives also reflect the institute's commitment to innovation and to using its research and development activities to positively impact society.”
Staring at the occasion, Prof. B. S. Murty (Director, IITH) expressed his gratitude and urged philanthropists and industry leaders to come together and make a Knowledge-driven and future-ready India. This, he said, meant that the 100 percent tax exemption was now an even better incentive for individuals to do their part in quality research and innovation.
Professor Mahendrakumar Madhavan, Dean (ACR), also spoke about how it is all the more important to give back to IITH, which in turn helps society and, in turn, the nation and India's technological progress.
Referencing the 2024 NIRF rankings, IITH stood at position 8 in engineering and 12 overall, affirming its reputation as one of the top institutions in the country.
The IITH has tied up with the Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, to set up SIMMECT (Swinburne-IITH Manufacturing, Materials, Energy, and Communication Technologies Joint Research Institute). This is a collaborative initiative to advance state-of-the-art research and innovation in industry and society.
