Good news for students in Bihar who dream of becoming doctors! The Bihar government is planning to increase the number of MBBS seats in all its government medical colleges. This step aims to give more opportunities to students who wish to pursue a medical degree after clearing the NEET UG exam .

According to initial plans, most government medical colleges in Bihar are likely to add 30 new MBBS seats each. This will significantly boost the total number of medical seats available for admission through the NEET UG entrance exam.

More Seats at Key Medical Colleges

Many medical colleges that currently offer 120 MBBS seats annually are expected to increase their capacity to 150 seats . This includes a number of important institutions across the state. Some larger colleges will see even bigger increases.

*Please note: PMCH is expected to see a larger increase, potentially reaching around 230 total MBBS seats , from its current intake of 150 students.

IGIMS Patna currently admits 120 students and is expected to increase its capacity to approximately 180 seats . AIIMS Patna and Purnea Medical College, which currently have 125 and 100 seats respectively, are also set to witness an increase in their approved student strength.

How the Increase Will Happen: The Approval Process

The Bihar Health Department has already asked the principals of all government medical colleges to begin the process. Colleges need to prepare and submit their proposals for increasing seats through an online portal managed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) . The NMC is the central body that governs medical education in India. It sets the rules and standards for all medical colleges.

Colleges must follow strict guidelines and timelines set by the NMC. This means they need to provide detailed information about their facilities, staff, and other resources to show they can handle more students. The NMC will then review these proposals and grant approval if all conditions are met.

Support for Colleges to Meet New Standards

The state health department understands that adding more seats requires more resources. To help colleges prepare, the department has promised support in two main areas:

  • Infrastructure: This includes making sure there are enough classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories with modern equipment, libraries, and hostel facilities for the increased number of students.
  • Faculty: This means ensuring that colleges have enough qualified teachers, professors, and medical staff to provide quality education and training.

Colleges have been advised to ensure they have the required number of teaching staff, sufficient laboratory facilities, and trained technical personnel. This is crucial because the NMC conducts regular inspections. If a college does not meet these guidelines, it might face difficulties in getting approval for the expanded seats.

Impact on Future Medical Professionals

This plan is a significant step forward for medical education in Bihar. By increasing MBBS seats, the government is creating more opportunities for talented students to pursue their dreams of becoming doctors. It will also help address the shortage of medical professionals in the state and ultimately improve healthcare services for the people of Bihar.
