Nearly 2 lakh candidates appear for CAT Exam every year out of which only a few thousand candidates are selected for admission in IIMs. However, CAT Score is accepted by numerous Management Institutes across the country. The Selection Criteria of all the 20 IIMs may Vary from each other. The CAT selection process is exactly similar to CAT counselling and is conducted in 3 phases.

First phase

Each test takers will be shortlisted on the basis of his/her CAT score viz-a-viz CAT cut offs fixed by each IIM individually for that year. Minimum IIM cut-offs are generally over90 percentile for General candidates (much lower for reserved category candidates), which means, those who will score above 90 percentile in CAT will be eligible for the interview round. But whether they are invited for the interview, depends on the actual CAT score and past academic record. CAT cut-offs of newer IIMs will range between 70-80 percentile.

Second phase

In this phase, IIMs will conduct WAT/PI round. This stage is the decider as the selection panel finalises a candidate on the basis of their performance in this round. A few years ago, the IIMs replaced GD with WAT. For the past couple of years, some of the IIMs conduct only the PI.

All the IIMs release their selection criteria every year. According to the notifications released, the selection procedure for the current year is similar to that of previous years.

  • The candidates who qualify the CAT examination and falls within the Cut Off of the respective Institute will be called for the second step i.e. WAT and PI Round.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main stages of the CAT selection process for IIMs?

The CAT selection process usually has three main phases. First, candidates are shortlisted based on their CAT score and cut-offs set by each IIM individually. Second, shortlisted candidates attend the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) rounds. Finally, academic performance and work experience are also considered before final selection for admission.

What is the minimum CAT percentile needed for IIM admission?

For general category candidates, the minimum CAT cut-off is generally over 90 percentile for older IIMs. However, newer IIMs might have cut-offs ranging from 70-80 percentile. For reserved categories, these cut-offs are much lower. Eligibility for interviews also depends on your actual CAT score and past academic record, not just meeting the minimum cut-off.

Do IIMs conduct Group Discussions or only WAT and PI rounds?

A few years ago, IIMs used to conduct Group Discussions (GDs) as part of their selection process. However, they have now replaced GDs with the Written Ability Test (WAT). For the past couple of years, some IIMs have even started conducting only the Personal Interview (PI) round, making it a crucial deciding factor for admission.

Is work experience compulsory to get into an IIM?

No, having work experience is not mandatory for IIM admission. Many IIMs admit fresh graduates too. However, work experience does contribute some weightage in the final selection process for candidates who have it. While not a must-have, good work experience can certainly boost your profile and improve your chances of selection.

What documents do I need for IIM interview eligibility verification?

If shortlisted, you must show all original mark sheets and degree certificates, along with attested copies, to prove your eligibility during the interview. If you are from a reserved category, your original caste/class or disability certificate and a photocopy are also required. Final year students need an original certificate from their institution.

Can students in their final year of graduation apply for IIMs?

Yes, candidates appearing for their final bachelor's degree examination can apply. If shortlisted for an interview, they need to show an original certificate from their university Principal/Registrar/Director. This certificate must confirm they have obtained at least 50% marks (45% for reserved categories) based on their latest available grades, plus an attested copy.

Do all Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) follow the same selection criteria?

No, the selection criteria vary among all 20 IIMs. While most IIMs follow a similar two-step process involving CAT scores and then WAT/PI rounds, the specific CAT cut-offs, and the weightage given to CAT score, academic performance, and work experience can differ. Each IIM releases its detailed selection criteria every year.
