Mistakes to Avoid During JoSAA Counselling 2025

JoSAA counselling is held for applicants to pursue admission in top IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs in India. Only JEE Main and JEE Advanced passed students are eligible to participate in the process of JoSAA counselling by filling out the registration form. Both the exams are important and demanding; one slight mistake while following the process of JoSAA counselling is demoralizing. Every year, many students miss out on the seats at the participating institutes of JoSAA because they do not have knowledge about the procedures of JoSAA admission.

To avoid this, candidates must start with getting accustomed to the complete schedule of JoSAA 2025 counselling. The regulatory authority will release the dates of JoSAA counselling on its official portal. Candidates are required to complete the JoSAA counselling registration and preference filling according to the schedule. Seat allocation will be subject to seat availability, ranks, and the preferences entered.

Numerous situations exist where seats can go vacant. Failure to report at the allocated RC will lead to losing the seat. Because of such failures, candidates can lose the chance to study in top IITs. Below, we detail some common mistakes made by students during the JoSAA counselling process and how to avoid them.

Mistakes to Avoid During JoSAA Counselling

Refer to the following to learn what are some common mistakes made by students during counselling of JoSAA every year and how to avoid them.

Mistake

Explanation

Tip to Avoid

Not researching opening & closing ranks

Choosing colleges/courses beyond your rank range wastes valuable choices.

Refer to past JoSAA cut-offs before locking choices.

Filling fewer choices

Limiting your options increases risk of not getting any seat.

Fill as many choices as possible (in order of preference).

Improper choice order

Placing lower-preference options above higher ones can lock you into them.

Carefully prioritize choices from dream to backup options.

Ignoring category or quota eligibility

Selecting institutes/branches you are not eligible for leads to rejection.

Check eligibility (Home State, Gender, Category, PwD) for every option.

Missing deadlines

Late registration, choice filling, or document upload can cancel your chance.

Set calendar reminders for every JoSAA round and deadline.

Uploading incorrect documents

Invalid or mismatched certificates may lead to cancellation of allotment.

Double-check all documents before uploading. Use scanned copies in correct format.

Not locking choices

If choices aren’t locked before deadline, the last saved version is used.

Always lock choices and download the confirmation page.

Skipping mock seat allocation analysis

Ignoring mock rounds may lead to poor final choice selection.

Use mock round feedback to rearrange your preferences.

Ignoring seat acceptance process

Failing to accept allotted seat on time results in cancellation.

Pay the seat acceptance fee and upload documents within the given time.

Wrong assumption about upgradation

Assuming you will get a better seat in the next round may lead to poor decisions.

Read JoSAA rules on float, slide, and freeze carefully.

Not participating in further rounds

Skipping rounds thinking your current seat is best may result in missed chances.

Participate in all rounds unless you're 100% satisfied.

Not reporting to reporting centre/institute

Even after allotment, not reporting leads to cancellation of seat.

Follow instructions on where and when to report (online/offline).

Unaware of special rounds (CSAB)

Many don’t know about CSAB for NIT+ seats after JoSAA.

Consider CSAB if you missed JoSAA or want to upgrade your NIT seat.
