Delhi University’s first cutoff list for UG admissions 2025 has set a new record for the students, as the scores are record-breaking. Students across India are now facing tough competition for a place in DU’s top colleges. The competition to get admission is really high and only students with almost perfect CUET scores are able to get into the courses of their choice.
At the top of the list is Hindu College, as it scored 950 out of 1,000 for BA (Hons.) Political Science. Following immediately after is Lady Shri Ram College (LSR), asking for 926 in BA (Hons.) Psychology, and St. Stephen’s College, which has bagged its BA (Hons.) English cutoff at the same926 mark.
Even programs like BCom (Hons.) at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) now require a score of 917, which isn’t easier to score, while Miranda House is also giving the students a tough competition, asking for 925 in Political Science.
What’s even more shocking is that the pressure is not just for the top five colleges. Cutoffs across for mid-level institutions are also nearly 900+, which makes it hard for students to make any errors.
Why Are DU Cutoffs So High in 2025?
Several factors are pushing DU’s cutoffs higher every year, and 2025 is no exception.
- Massive Course Preference: For BCom (Hons.), DU registered nearly 20 lakh program-college choices. For BA (Hons.) English, over 12 lakh preferences were recorded.
- High First Preferences: SRCC received nearly 38,795 first-preference entries, followed by Hindu College at 31,901, and Hansraj College at 15,902, these responses are overwhelming compared to previous years. It shows that these colleges are mostly chosen by students over others.
- CUET Normalization: With CUET now standardizing scores across different subject shifts and test timings, scores are being “normalized.” This will make the selection process more tight, as students are expected to get a near perfect score.
- Stream-Based Preference: Humanities stream dominated this year, accounting for58.9% of all choices, while commerce took 20.9% and science 20.2%. This shows why the competition in humanities and social science is so tight.
What's Next in the DU Admission Process?
The university has limited 1,528 course-college combinations, and over 71,000 eligible applicants are now racing for those seats. The second cutoff list will be released on July 28, and while it might bring slight relief in select programs, for the most part, the competition will remain just as intense.
All applicants must confirm their seat by July 21 on the DU CSAS portal or risk losing it. This has added another layer of urgency, especially for those waiting on the next list.
What It Means for Aspirants
The tough reality for many students this year is that a score of 925+ is becoming the new normal at Delhi’s elite colleges. While CUET aimed to bring more fairness to the process, the normalization model and the intense demand backfired and made this even harder on students.
The new standard also revealed why students can no longer rely on CUET scores alone; it is important for them to have a strategic backup plan. Whether that’s searching for private universities, newer DU colleges, or alternative career pathways. Adapting to this standard is easier or searching for a new path.
As the race continues, all eyes are now on the second and third cutoff lists to see whether it will get any easier or the bar keeps setting even higher.
