What is the CTET Exam?

Eligibility Criteria for CTET 2026

To apply for the CTET exam, candidates must meet certain requirements:

  • Nationality: Only Indian citizens can apply.
  • Minimum Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old . There is no upper age limit.

For Paper 1 (to teach Classes 1 to 5):

You need to have passed Class 12 with at least 50% (or 45% for some reserved categories) marks. Also, you must have completed or be in the final year of a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education or 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) . Another option is a Bachelor’s degree along with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) .

For Paper 2 (to teach Classes 6 to 8):

You need a Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% (or 40% for some reserved categories) marks. Also, you must have completed or be in the final year of a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education , a B.Ed degree , or a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) . If you have passed Senior Secondary with 50% marks and are in the final year of B.A.Ed/B.Sc.Ed or B.A/B.Sc.Ed, you can also apply.

CTET Exam Pattern

The CTET exam is conducted offline, using a pen and paper. There are two papers:

  • Paper I: For those who want to teach Classes 1 to 5.
  • Paper II: For those who want to teach Classes 6 to 8.

Each paper has 150 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) , and each question carries 1 mark . There are no negative marks for wrong answers. The syllabus for the February 2026 exam is expected to be the same as the previous CTET July 2024 cycle.
